Pick Your Side

This week in Honors History 10 class we learned about the election of 1860. The essential question was "Were the results of the election of 1860 representative of the deep divisions of the civil war?" I agree with this question because the Northern states did not want slavery, the middle states wanted to keep everything the way it was and the Southern states wanted to keep slavery. The election was between four candidates. The candidates were Lincoln a republican who was against slavery, Douglas who was a Northern democrat who believed in the popular sovereignty. Breckinridge a Southern democrat believed that slavery had no limits. Lastly Bell a constitutional Union wanted to preserve the constitution but at the same time include slavery. With all of this information in class we went on a website that told us more information about this and also had pictures. With the information and pictures we made an educreation video talking about the election while showing pictures that match what we are saying.

Just The North and South

This week in Honors History 10 class we learned about how slavery affected the success of the civil war. The essential question was "How did the differences between the North and the South affect each region's strategy and success for the civil war?" To answer this question we made infograms that provided statistics about the North and the South. The North had a big population of 23,000,000 and railroad mileage of 22,000. The South had a smaller population of only 8,700,000 but they had all different kinds of labor and they had slaves to do this labor. This process helped me better understand the the situations faced by the Union and the Confederacy at the start of the war because the Union wanted slavery but the confederates did not. The confederates made a constitution stating that owning slaves in The United States is prohibited.

Not Making Progress

This week in honors history 10 class we learned about "the Elephant in the Room". The elephant in the room is Defined as an issue that is present but is avoided. The essential question for this topic was "how do we know the debate over slavery was the "elephant in the room" for American politics in early 19th century?" To help answer this question we got into groups of three and took notes on 14 topics. With these notes we had to decide if they were anti-slavery or proslavery. Once we knew that we had this information each group made a timeline summarizing these 14 events.

During the 1850's slavery was the elephant in the room to society but not everyone agreed. Some people were considered "proslavery" which meant that they liked slavery and were for it. The people that were against slavery were anti-slavery. The 1533 Gadsden purchase was proslavery. This was proslavery because the United States purchased $10 million dollars of land to make railroads. These railroads helped transport slaves to the south and so people could vote for slave territories. Also the Kansas Nebraska act was proslavery also. The Kansas Nebraska act is pro slavery because it allows slaves to go to the north of the line. This completely violates the Missouri compromise. The Missouri compromise allowed slavery in only the western territories of the United States. Not all of the Kansas Nebraska act was proslavery though. The Other part of the Kansas Nebraska act created railroads in Chicago so that anti-slavery people could travel to vote against slavery. Senator Charles Summers was a person that believed in anti-slavery. He made a speech called "The Crime Against Kansas". During this speech he talked about how slavery was cruel and all the bad things about it. Summer got badly injured by senator Andrew Butler because he discussed him and his thoughts on how he thought slavery was good.

Slavery was a big issue and caused "the elephant in the room". These four acts answer the essential question because slavery was such a big issue and yes people wanted to fix it but it was mostly just avoided. If you were anti-slavery people who were proslavery never listened to you and made the situation better.

Slavery is Never Okay

In honors history 10 class we learned about the morality of slavery. Morality means what you think is right and wrong. We learned about three people and their thoughts about slavery. These three people are George Fitzhugh, Frederick Douglas and Gerald Danzer. In class we read documents about these people, looked at maps,Watched a video about the cotton gin, and learned about Futa Jallon, Africa v, Natchez and Mississippi we also watched the video prince among slaves.

To be "entrenched" means being difficult or unlikely to change. Slavery became economically entrenched in American society by the early 19th century because the cotton industry was just starting. Cotton was economically profitable to grow and was a big part of the populations revenue. The cotton demand and the price will never go down because people will always need cotton. Back then slaves where the cheapest option of labor during this booming economical time. Human dignity teaches everyone that we all have value, are worthy of great respect and must be free from slavery these things can not be taken away from us. The system of slavery based on race affect human dignity because slave owners did not treat slaves like real people. Slaves human dignity was not considered at all. George Fitzhugh liked slavery and thought it e
was good. Fredrick Douglas and Gerald Danzer both wanted slavery to come to an end. One human characteristic that the system tends to ignore is the slaves feelings and personalities. George Fitzhugh said "The negro slaves of the south are the happiest ,and, in some sense , the freest people in the world." ... " they enjoy liberty, because they are oppressed neither by care nor labor." The slave owners didn't treat slaves as real people therefore they did not think they had any emotions. If George knew how they actually felt he would know that slaves aren't happy and aren't free at all.

(Video about cotton Gin)
People may have different opinions on things but slavery will always be wrong. Just like anything else you start it is hard to stop and that's what happened to slavery. Slavery is and never will be okay.

Times Have Changed

During the 19th century women were treated differently. Women were the people that did everything around the house and had less rights as men. Women had to follow lots of laws which made it hard for them to be their own person. They were treated as if nobody cared about them. Their husbands could beat them if they didn't think she was doing a good enough job around the house.

During the mid-19th century society reacted to women's demands for equality by writing a declaration. The decalaration states That all men and women are equal and should be treated the same. Although some people were all for equality others were not. The "Onieda Whig" talks about how if women had the same rights as men and were treated the same "who would cook the dinner?" This is a negative thought some thought about when the declaration was announced.

This still is going on today although you may not notice it as easily. In class we watched a commercial for Pantene and it showed the differences between a man and a women today. One example that they used that I found to be 100% true today is in politics or when someone is giving a speech a men tends to come off persuasive and women tend to come off pushy. Another example from the commercial that I found to be very true was when the dad was up late working and they labeled him as dedicated but when they showed the mom doing the same thing she was considered selfish. I think people still view women and men as different because by tradition. From a long time ago women were always the ones to stay him with the kids and take care of them while the man went to work. Times have changed and the 21st century should not still be thinking this.

The Better Life

(An excerpt from "The life of Horace Mann)
Mann, Horace, and Mary Tyler Peabody Mann. "Chapter III Journal." Life of Horace Mann, 614. 1st ed. Vol. 1. Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1806.

The author of the book Life of Horace Mann was Mann's wife. This book was written to inform readers about Horace and also what he did to change education. This excerpt talks about how Horace wanted to change the common school and give every child an equal opportunity to be educated. This excerpt and the book gives a clear picture of the event. The author was on Horace's side agreeing that all kids should have a good education. The author isn't trying to convince us of anything it was more of just an informational book about Horace's life.

Hello Mr.President

In honors history 10 class this week we studied Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson was known for being " the people's president". In order to learn about him we divided into six groups and their were three topics Indian removal, Bank war and the Spoils system. Every two groups got one topic and analyzed the documents to go with it. We then made presentations and shared them with the class. The essential question this week was is Andrew Jackson's long-standing reputation as "the people's president" deserved? why?why not? For certain topics his title was deserved but in others it was not.

My group had the Indian removal. What happened during the Indian removal was Jackson wanted the  Indian's to leave the land they were living on because white farm owners wanted to take over. Jackson wanted to keep the people safe so he set aside land in the west of Mississippi for them. Although this was nice of him the people did not like this because they wanted to continue to live on the land of their ancestors. This shows that Jackson should not deserve the title of "the people's president" because he had no consideration for the Indians and forced them to leave their land.

The Bank war was when Jackson wanted to demolish the bank and all of their power. He thought the bank of the United States had too much power and wanted to change that. He wanted to change that by making the dollar have no value. The bank war shows that Jackson was "the people's president" because tried to even out the power between the rich and poor and wanted to just have one large bank.

The last topic was the spoils system. The spoils system is when a political party gives government jobs to voters or supporters after an election victory also called rotation of office. Some negative effects were that jobs were given out based on loyalty and the ineffectiveness of the federal government. The letter of congress states that change is good and that sometimes just because someone is good at a job doesn't mean you can't change things up every once and awhile. This shows that Jackson should not get the title as "the people's president" because he only acted like "the people's president" to the people who liked him.
